About Dera Bassi

Situated on the banks of River Ghaggar in Indian state Punjab, close to the official boundaries of Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Union Territory of Chandigarh lies the small city of Dera Bassi, under the jurisdiction of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar(Mohali) district established in April 2006. Dera Bassi is a municipal council and a newly formed tehsil with lots of future prospects for growth and development. The city is located at a distance of 21kms from the district headquarters at Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar on the Northern side of state Capital Chandigarh on Delhi Chandigarh National Highway 20.

As per the historical records Dera Bassi town has been essentially a part of Kalsia estate with its Chhachhrauli. The Kalsi ruled the area for many decades. It is also notable that near the city Dera Bassi there is a gigantic fort based in the outskirts of the city area which is believed to be a Fort built in by the Mughal emperors. Though the fort is presently in a ruined state but apart from serving the Mughals the Fort also was a prominent guest house of the Kalsai rulers where many important decisions were materialized. Ravi Sher Singh, the great ruler of the Kalsai Kingdom, visited the location in the year 1922. However before getting attached to Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district it was essentially a part of Patiala district. Another historical influence in Dera Bassi city is the fact that it is a place mentioned in the famous Hindu epic Mahabharat where the prominent characters of Pandava is known to reside in this city after escaping the cunning murder plot planned by Duryodhana at Lakshagraha. The city has numerous temples of Gods and Goddesses which crafts this story of yesteryears.

Geographically Dera Bassi is located at 30.58 North Latitude and 76.84 East Longitude at an altitude of 299meters from the sea level. The beautiful city of Dera Bassi remains surrounded by Zirakpur Tehsil, Barwala Tehsil , Chandigarh Tehsil and Panchkula Tehsil. The nearby cities to Dera Bassi are Ajitgarh, Zirakpur, Kharar, Kurali, Banur, Lalru and Naya Gaon etc. Sandy to Sandy loam soils prevails in this region and it helps in farming and irrigation activity of the area.

However the usual scenario depicts hot summers, cold winters, heavy rainfall during monsoon months and occasional unpredictable rainfall and stormy winds during winter and summer season. While June is the hottest month in Dera Bassi, January is the coldest month in Winter. Temperature in the summer goes as high 44°C whereas in winters it pretty often goes below freezing level with unnatural frosts. The average temperature in summer remains from 35°C to 42°C, in monsoon season from 16°C to 27°C and in winter from 5°C to 15°C. The best time to visit Dera Bassi is the pre winter and post winter months which usually are during the period of October to November or from February to March. This is the ideal time to roam around and enjoy the beauty of the city.
